We started Value Punter because most writing about betting sites is really advertising in disguise, ranking operators by the size of their sign-up offers. Our angle is different and deliberately dry. We treat the odds as the product, explain the bookmaker's margin in plain arithmetic, and show how comparing prices and staking sensibly affect what you actually keep. The aim is a reader who can judge a site for themselves rather than take our word or anyone else's.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to help UK adults make informed, unhurried decisions about betting sites, and to do so without ever encouraging anyone to bet. Every page starts from the position that betting is entertainment with a built-in cost, not a source of income, and that the margin means the average customer loses over time. Within that frame, we explain how to choose a licensed site, read a price and use the controls that keep spending in check.
We do not name or rank operators, and we do not tell anyone to sign up. What we offer is method: how to verify a licence, how to measure an overround, and how to spot a site whose terms are working against you.
Independence and how we are funded
We are independent of the gambling industry. We are not a bookmaker, we are not a regulator, and we do not accept advertising or payment from operators, nor do we carry affiliate links to betting sites. That independence is the whole point, because it is what lets us say plainly that a sharper everyday price matters more than any bonus, and that some sites are best avoided altogether.
Because we take nothing from operators, nothing on this site is a recommendation to bet with any particular company. Where we link out at all, it is only to official UK sources such as the Gambling Commission and support services, and rarely.
How we research and review
Our facts come from primary UK sources: the UK Gambling Commission and its public register, GOV.UK for legislation and betting duty, and GamCare and BeGambleAware for support. Figures such as the £150 financial risk-check threshold from 28 February 2025, the April 2025 slot stake limits, and the January 2026 bonus rules are taken from those sources and dated on each page. The arithmetic of odds and margins is standard and shown worked through so you can check it yourself.
Every guide is written by Marcus Feldon and reviewed for accuracy by our content reviewer, Dr Anita Bardsley, a sports statistician and odds analyst, who checks the numerical worked examples and the way the rules are described. Where a fact has a date attached, we recheck it when the rules change.
Who writes and checks this site
Marcus Feldon spent the better part of fifteen years working with betting prices from the inside before he wrote a word for this site. He began on a racing and football trading desk, compiling early prices and adjusting them as money came in, then moved into odds modelling, building the kind of probability models that sit behind a book and learning exactly how the overround is set and defended. That work leaves you with one durable lesson, that the margin is the product and everything else is presentation, and it is the lesson this whole site is built around. He writes the guides here in plain arithmetic because he spent years on the side of the counter that profits when punters cannot do the sums.
Dr Anita Bardsley reviews everything we publish for numerical accuracy and fair description of the rules. She is a sports statistician and odds analyst with a doctorate in applied statistics, and around a decade of work modelling sporting outcomes, testing predictive models and translating probabilities into prices. Her day-to-day work has involved separating genuine signal from noise in performance data, quantifying uncertainty honestly, and stress-testing the claims that betting marketing makes about form and value. When a worked example on this site converts odds to implied probability, computes an overround, or shows how margin compounds across an accumulator, she has checked the figures and the wording line by line. Where a claim cannot be stood behind with a source or a calculation, she asks us to cut it.
Between them they give the site its two tests. Marcus asks whether a point would have helped or hurt the book he used to run; Anita asks whether the numbers actually hold. A page has to pass both before it goes up.
Keeping information current
Betting regulation moves, so we treat currency as part of accuracy. Each page carries a last-checked date, and we revisit the licensing rules, thresholds and payment rules when the Commission or the government updates them. If you spot something that has fallen out of date, we would rather hear about it than leave it, and we will correct it.
We would sooner say less and be right than pad a page with detail we cannot stand behind. That is why the site sticks to verifiable facts and clearly labelled worked examples rather than tips or predictions.
